Ahhhhh…gardening! So much work, but oh so rewarding. I took a walk around the garden recently while spreading amendments to ensure healthy plants. It is so exciting to my gardener’s heart to see little signs of life peeking through the soil. Old tulip bulbs that have been in the ground for years are still making their entrance to seek the sun. Daffodil bulbs that were planted by my husband’s Grandma Violet so long ago jumped into spring with their wagging heads just ready to pop open. Globe Allium that I planted in frosty ground last fall…guess what? They survived and are anxious to throw their beautiful purple heads into the mix of spring flowers. Bushes are beginning to show swelling buds, trees are filling out theirs just as quickly. A flock of robins was in the garden seeking the ever-elusive worm.
But as rewarding as all that is, there is a ton of work to do out there. Started on the bed nearest the shed. I cleaned out the old stalks, uncovered the edge of the edging from encroaching grass and “Charlie”, weeded the whole thing and moved on to the next bed. My goal is 5 beds…I did it! I still need to move some plants around; moving some of them away from the edging so they don’t get damaged when my “garden boy” edges the beds for me, relocating a new rose bush to give another place to pick tiny roses for bouquets, digging out “self-seeded” plants from the wrong location and putting them back where they belong or just hoeing out the excessive self-seeded ones.
The greenhouse is built, painted and moved into its permanent place. I now have double the space I had before. Thanks again to my “garden boy” (husband) for remaking the greenhouse for me. Last year’s derecho and the straight-line wind in the fall tipped it over both directions. It broke some of the braces and needed to be repaired. The pea gravel and the stepping stones are in place and there is a little garden awaiting flowers in the front. I moved the plants that had been started in the house to their new abode today. The clouds help to keep them from getting burned by the sun and the will acclimate well this week because of the partly cloudy conditions.
